What We're Catching - 19/08/16
We’re coming out of winter here in Hervey Bay, with daytime air temps in the mid twenties, and water temps are on the increase as well, especially on the shallow sand flats where I take our dogs for a walk each day. Over the last week numbers of flathead lies have been turning up where I haven’t seen them for at least 5 months.
At low tide this is a great way of locating flathead, and even working out at what stage of the tide they are in any given spot. They usually sit with their head into the current, often in an easy ambush position, like a sand ridge or drop off. It’s just a case of looking at the direction their head is facing, to work out which way the current was running, either in or out, come back at that stage of the tide and there’s a good chance they’ll be there. The size of the fish is also very obvious, you will often see the lie of a large female, surrounded by a number of smaller males. Don’t forget to check size and bag limits in your state, and let those big girls go to breed another day!
